Geriatric Care Unit
The Pathways Geriatric Care Unit at Gadsden Regional Medical Center is a 15-bed, secure, inpatient psychiatric unit for the treatment of senior adults aged 65 and older who are experiencing acute behavioral health treatment needs. Since we are located at a fully functioning medical facility, our patients also have access to consultation by other medical specialists for non-psychiatric medical needs.
The Geriatric Care Unit at Gadsden Regional Medical Center provides care with a treatment team that includes attending psychiatrists, staff nurses, licensed master and clinical social workers, nurse practitioners, multi-skilled technicians, various therapists and other consultants deemed necessary by the treatment team. The treatment team professionals have training in the care of senior adults and their unique needs. Our treatment team collaborates to provide an environment where the patient and their family can best work on specific treatment goals.
Our goals are to provide our patients with cognitive/memory stimulation and evaluation, a safe discharge plan and to learn new problem solving and coping skills, interpersonal skills, life skills, social skills and medication management. This secure environment allows the staff to evaluate each patient and to provide recommendations for continued care. This also provides each patient the opportunity to practice the learned skills associated with later life. Our staff is trained to use evidence-based practices to help our patients cope with life changes, with an emphasis on planning to continue the work of recovery following discharge from the hospital. A structured therapeutic program is offered on the Pathways Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit to provide patients with the optimal environment for recovery.
Our inpatient treatment team works closely with outpatient behavioral health services, mental health centers, independent living facilities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health and hospice providers, and other treatment resources to ensure that every patient has access to appropriate community-based care upon discharge from the hospital or shifting to outpatient care.
