Gadsden Regional Medical Center Expands Technology with New 128-Slice CT Suite and Upgraded Cardiac Cath Lab

Gadsden, AL — Gadsden Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is proud to announce the expansion of its medical technology with the addition of a new 128-slice CT suite and a completely upgraded cardiac catheterization (cath) lab. These investments enhance the hospital’s ability to provide faster, more precise diagnostics and cardiac care for patients across the region.
The new 128-slice CT scanner delivers high-resolution imaging with greater speed and accuracy, allowing physicians to detect and diagnose a wide range of conditions more efficiently while improving patient comfort.
“Our new CT suite represents a significant step forward in imaging capabilities,” said Penny Dobbins, imaging director at GRMC. “With a 0.35-second rotation speed capturing 128 image slices in a single rotation, we’re able to deliver incredibly detailed, high-resolution scans. This technology provides up to an 82% reduction in radiation dose for patients, supports cardiac imaging with the ability to complete a full heart scan in just two heartbeats, and includes metal artifact reduction for clearer imaging in patients with implants. It also enables rapid, life-saving diagnostics for stroke and trauma, with full-body scans completed in as little as six seconds—ultimately improving both speed and accuracy of care.”
In addition to imaging advancements, GRMC has completed a full upgrade of a cardiac cath lab, equipping it with the technology to support minimally invasive procedures and improve outcomes for patients with heart and vascular conditions.
“The upgraded cath lab allows our team to perform complex cardiac procedures with even greater precision and efficiency,” said Kristen Bedwell, director of cardiology services. “With a 50% reduction in radiation exposure for patients, additional radiation protection for staff and physicians, and new operational functionality that helps reduce procedure times, this technology enhances both safety and quality of care for everyone involved.”
These upgrades reflect GRMC’s ongoing commitment to investing in innovation and enhancing patient care close to home.
“At Gadsden Regional, we are dedicated to providing safe, compassionate care close to home for our patients,” said Michael Hall, chief executive officer of GRMC. “By continuing to invest in technology and facility upgrades, we’re ensuring that our community has access to high quality care without having to travel outside the area.”
